The following system of equations represents the situation:
x+y=12 0.25x+0.10y=1.80

Nick has four (4) quarters and eight (8) dimes in his pocket. 

Four quarters equals to a dollar and eight dimes equals eighty cents. 
Four plus eight is twelve.
