If Alberto's school is 3 miles due south of his house and 4 miles due west of Jimmy's house, what is the straight line distance between Alberto's house and Jimmy's house?

Hi.

I take this as a word problem for the Pythagorean theorem.

So, we need to square the 3 & 4. We're gonna add them once that's done, and square root the answer.

9 + 16 = 25

The square root of 25 is 5.

The straight line distance is 5 miles.
