What Joe is experiencing is the integrity v despair stage of the Erikson's theory of psychosocial development.
The integrity v Despair is that stage of life where an individual would begin to reflect back on the life that they have lived and wonder if they had spent it doing the right things.
A person who is at this stage would either have a sense of fulfillment because of what they have become accomplished or they would be in despair for the things that they never accomplished.
Joe is reflecting on how much of his time he spent working and he is therefore reflecting on the life that he has lived.
