There is a scientific study that music can help the rhythm or strides a person has while working out. There are many fitness watches; which can calculate the number of steps you took, distance you ran, your heart rate, etc. I (personally) have used fitness apps to help consider what I should do for a workout, as in, what would most be a benefit to me and my body type.
Some of this is from personally experience, as I am on a cross country team and use technology for my workouts in day to day life.
