For an object to move, a force must be exerted on it, because we know from Newton's laws that an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by an outside force. Something that can change the state of motion is perhaps friction, as it can slow down movement, like air friction or resistance can slow down objects being pulled down by gravity.
