The Taliban leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, surrendered his control of Kandahar and it was reported that Osama bin Laden's closest friend and military planner was killed in a bombing raid. The loss of Kandahar which was the southern stronghold as well as spiritual heart of the Taliban marked the final fall of their formal rule in Afghanistan.
