Mary might be diagnosed as having a psychological eating disorder called Anorexia Nervosa as well as Bulemia Nervosa which are characterized by extreme weight loss, a fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image. Bulemia Nervosa involves periods of excessive overeating, called binging, followed by purging, which is forcing one's self to vomit the food that was just eaten. Both conditions are severe and life-threatening and require professional help through counseling, monitoring, medication, and emotional support. Eating disorders can affect anyone, both male and female, of any age, but are most prevalent among American women and are rising in number among college-age women.
