If you attended post high school education the employer wants to know what you were majoring in or attempting to get a degree in. If you completed high school with no formal education after that, you would probably put "general studies" as your answer.

The area of study or major represents the field of study in which the candidate has a specialization. The area of study in the job application describes the employer about the candidate's expertise.

The job application must contain the degree that the candidate holds in order to show the knowledge and skills that the candidate possesses.  It provides the employer with the required information about the candidate as per the job description.

For example, a candidate must include the study area that is either business management, engineering, or others in his job application to give the employer a better understanding of his domain of interest.
