It is false statement that sodium is an under-consumed nutrient.

What is nutrient?

  • It is categorised into: carbohydrates, fats, protein, minerals, vitamins, roughage and water.
  • Carbohydrates and fats are energy giving foods whereas proteins are body building food.
  • Vitamins protects our body from infections and diseases whereas minerals are required by our body for its development and normal functions.
  • Minerals include iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, zinc, iodine, chromium, copper and chloride.

What do you mean by under-consumed nutrients?

  • Low intake of certain nutrients in our food and beverages are referred as under-consumed nutrients.

Vegetable, meats, processed food, beverages and salts are rich in sodium. Most of the food that we eat have sodium in it, so it is not an under-consumed nutrients.
