"Things only have meaning in context"

You can see this from the examples that Dickenson lists.

"Land by oceans past" - You would not be able to tell the land if there were no oceans

"Peace by its battles told" - How would we have a definition for peace without battles?

The theme or message of this poem is the last answer:

Things only have meaning in context.

The first answer makes no sense, or at least to me, because I don’t see anything destructive that relates to the poem.

The second and third answer have only one topic of the poem.

You will be left with the last answer, “Things only have meaning in context.”

Hopefully this makes sense, I’m really bad at explaining things.

Anyways, hope this helps!
