According to Alice Goffman, we are sending children from low socioeconomic groups (particularly African American and other racial minority children) to prisons where they are kept even further out of reach of the 'American Dream'. Goffman claims that these imprisoned children are further "saddled" with probation, parole, court fees and major restrictions.
