Italian government is very similar with the absolute monarch in the middle age period, where the king basically had all the power to create very regulations and punish whoever he wanted.
Examples of totalitarian government would be : Germany under Hitler, Russia under Stalin, and italy under Mussolini

In democratic system, people are required to choose their representatives to be seated in the Government office.
In order to limit the power of the Leaders, a re-election is being done on specific time period (so they could be easily replaced if the majority of voters feel displaesed about the leadership)

So, as long as it's still protected under the scope of written law, no one could ever take basic freedom away from civilians in democratic nations

One political party indicates that the party obtained a full control over every government matters in that nation.
Which means every regulations that they made will be remained unchallenged and they could move the country in whichever direction they pleased.

A trial is conducted if the nation is ruled by law. IF the nation is ruled by absolute leader, the leader will had the final say on the fate of every citizens.
Leaders of totalitarian government do not even need any basic ground to impose punishment (i.e : Hitler Gassed a lot of innocent Jews for no valid reason  at all)

In a democratic government however, power is centered on the people as they vote their leaders into power for a certain amount of time. They also have several freedoms such as the freedom to choose their own religion and to say what they want.
