Both Ponyboy and Two-Bit admit that the gang couldn’t get along without Johnny. Two-Bit goes so far as to say that he wishes that anyone else were in the hospital rather than Johnny. Why do you think they feel this way?
They both say that Johnny Cade is the glue that holds their greaser gang together. The gang need Johnny to take care of. He is the gang's pet: everybody worries about him.
