On some levels they were the most advanced: they are the only pre-Columbian civilization to develop a script! This is an argument in favour.
Yet, on the other hand, they did not conquer other tribes, as Inca and Aztecs did, which would be an argument for Inca or Aztecs.
In the end, it's a subjective question.
