What was the Hindenburg disaster?

The Hindenburg disaster was an airship accident that occurred on May 6, 1937, in Manchester Township, New Jersey, United States. It was caused by an electrostatic discharge that ignited leaking hydrogen.

The story made huge headlines in newspapers across the country, such as “Airship like a Giant Torch on a darkening New Jersey field” and “97 Believed Dead as Hindenburg Crashes!” which promoted a sense of fear into U.S. citizens. The second headline here, shared false information that misguided the public and magnified the outcome of the disaster. Some theories suggested that it was sabotaged, some said it was due to lightning and others hypothesized theories. There were ground crew members and photographers there to take pictures of the anticipated landing. However, the opposite occurred, though they still captured pictures but of the tragedy that occurred. Leadbelly, jazz songwriter, wrote a song about the disaster the song emphasizes the feelings of those who lost friends and family in the disaster.

Here the different media such as Newspapers, Photographs and Songs each had their own different impact on the public. The Newspapers instilled fear with the promotion of unnecessary hypothesis while the photographs gave visuals and the song sympathized with the victims and their families.
