The Ottoman Empire was an imperial state that was founded in 1299. It emerged from the break-down of several Turkish tribes brought about by the demise of the Seljuk Turk Empire.
The Ottoman Empire's main goal of its early days was expansion. At its peak, the Period of Great Expansion, it included the areas of Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia, Hungary, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, parts of Arabian Peninsula and North Africa. It also became the dominant naval force that controls the Mediterranean Sea.
