Plasma membrane is very different from cell walls. Plasma membrane is also called cell membrane or cytoplasmic membrane. It is a biological membrane which separates the inside of all cells from the external or outside environment. The plasma membrane is permeable (selectively) to ions and organic molecules. It controls  the movement of substances of both in and out of cells. The plasma membrane’s basic function is to protect cells from their surroundings.  It is involved in several different  cellular processes  like ion conductivity, cell adhesion and cell signaling and serves as the attachment surface for many extracellular structures.
