Indira Gandhi was assassinated by one of her own Sikh bodyguards. The reason for this assassination is attributed to the Operation Blue Star which was carried out by the Indian Army upon Indira Gandhi's orders who was then the Prime Minister of India. The Operation involved shooting all the people especially Sikhs on sight, in the holiest worship places for the Sikhs, the Harmandir Sahib Complex also known as the Golden Temple. The operation was done to get a grip on the deteriorating law and order situation in the province.
