North wasn't good farm land like the south was. It wasn't all tobacco and cotton. There was the bread basket states ( North and South Carolina) I might be wrong but I think up north was a lot of clay and it wasn't good for farming in a large scale. That's when subsistence farming came into play. The answer is A based on the geography of the two areas (North and South) one area was better for farming than the other. Hope I helped.
