One of the main reasons why the size of cities increased during the Gilded Age is because there was an increase in business due to more capital being spent, and most of these business were either in or close to cities.

The increase in the size of cities during the Gilded Age can be attributed to a number of reasons; For instance, more industry came to the cities during this time and technology in mass transit was greatly improving. Also there was a lot of capital floating around at that time, many wealthy men had the ability to bring industry and businesses to cities which in turn made cities the most appealing for immigrants seeking job, thus increased growth.
