A pot of water is being heated up. The temperature of the water can be modeled by this equation with y representing the temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit, and x representing the time, in minutes, that the water has been on the stove.

y = 9.5x + 62.1

After how many minutes will the temperature of the water be 138.1°F?

y= degrees Fahrenheit (given)

138.1=9.5x+62.1

Subtract 62.1 on both sides. 

76=9.5x

Divide both sides by 9.5.

x=8

It will be 8 minutes until the water will be 138.1.
