Ethylene is a natural plant growth hormone and is naturally produced by plants but florists use ethylene gas to spray on plants and flowers to speed up the growth process to enhance their sale. It stimulates the opening of buds which grow into young plants at a faster than a normal rate.
Ethylene gas is also used to spray on fruits and vegetables to quick their ripening and also enhance flavor and color.
