Who was Akbar?
Akbar was the third Muslim Emperor of the Mughal Empire who succeeded his father Humayun. He is considered as the greatest of all the Mughal emperors because he not only expanded but also consolidated his empire, making it the largest, strongest and richest kingdom of his time.
To preserve peace and order in a religiously and culturally diverse empire, he adopted policies that won him loyalty and support of his non-Muslim populations. He appointed non-Muslims to high civil and military posts. Therefore, he was the first Mughal ruler to win the trust and loyalty of his native subjects.
What was the Mughal Empire?
The Mughal Empire was established by the Sultan Babur in the sixteenth century, with his legendary victory over the Lodhi Sultan in 1526. Mughal Empire lasted for almost seven generations.
The Mughal Empire brought almost the entire Indian subcontinent under one domain. The Moghul Empire became the most powerful empires in India because of its well trained army, government, and economy.
What was the religious policy of Akbar?
Akbar's efforts to unify his people resulted in a tolerant religious policy. Akbar allowed religious freedom not only to the Hindus but also to the people of other religious faith.
Akbar showed respect to other religions by abolishing poll tax which were imposed on the non-Muslims and by participating in the Hindu festivals. Also, He built a building called 'Ibadat Khana' where he held discussions with the religious leaders.
Therefore, Akbar granted religious equality to all.
