Steve has 340 colored pencils , that was pretty easy

Alright, lets get started.

Suppose Steve have number of pencils = x

Martha has 4 times as many as Steve

Hence, Martha have number of pencils = 4 x

So, total number of pencils they both have [tex] = x + 4x [/tex]

So, total number of pencils they both have [tex] = 5 x [/tex]

As per given in question, number of total pencils are 85.

So,

[tex] 5x = 85 [/tex]

Dividing 5 in both sides

[tex] \frac{5x}{5} = \frac{85}{5} [/tex]

[tex] x = 17 [/tex]

It means setve have 17 pencils

Martha has pencils = [tex] 4 * 17 = 68 [/tex]

Steve has 17 and Martha has 68 pencils. : Answer

Hope it will help :)
