The total capacity of 6 pitchers and 12 glasses is 21 liters. The capacity of a pitcher is 5 times that of a glass. Find the capacity of each glass. Give your answer in liters.

Dahlia has just enough money to buy either 6 pears and 20 oranges or 12 oranges and 11 pears. A pear costs $0.80. How much does an orange cost?

A plumber has two pipes. One pipe is 7 times as long as the other pipe. He cuts 2.2 meters from the longer pipe. The remaining length of this pipe is 3 times that of the shorter pipe. Find the length of the shorter pipe in meters.

1. 6(5g) +12g = 21 30g + 12g = 21 42g = 21, therefore g = 21/42 = 0.5 liters p = 5 * 0.5 = 2.5 liters

2. 20 - 12 = 8 oranges;11 - 6 = 5 pears;
8 oranges costs as much as 5 pears;
But, 5 pears costs 5 × 0.80 = $4;
Then, an orange cost 4 ÷ 8 = $0.5

3.Let one pipe be x 
The other pipe is 7 times as long = 7x 
When he cuts 2.2 m from the longer pipe the remaining length is = 7x – 2.2 (7x is the longer pipe of x and 7x!) 
When he cuts 2.2 m from the longer pipe the remaining length is 3 times that of the shorter pipe. 
7x-2.2 is 3 times x 
7x-2.2 = 3x 
7x-3x = 2.2 
4x = 2.2 
X= 2.2/4 = 0.55 m (this is the length of the shorter pipe in meters)
