The 13th Amendment banned slavery and involuntary servitude. Before this amendment, slavery was implicitly allowed by Article I, Section 2, Clause (also known as the Three-Fifths Compromise), and since the American Revolution, there was a division within the states between states that allowed slavery and states that banned slavery.
