The liquid state of matter is a middle phase between gas and solid. Like the particles of a solid, particles in a liquid also exhibit intermolecular attraction. However, liquid particles have more space among them, so they do not possess a stationary position. The attraction between the particles in a liquid maintains the volume of the liquid persistent.

The motion of the particles makes the liquid to change in shape. Liquids will flow and occupy the lowest part of a container, consuming the shape of the container but not change in volume. The restricted amount of space among the particles signifies that liquids exhibit very confined compressibility.
