EXPLANATION:

The black stone inscription containing the Hammurabi Code was engraved from a single diorite plate weighing four tons, a stone that is durable but very difficult to carve.

At its peak is a carving of two and a half feet from Hammurabi who stood accepting the law - symbolized by the tape and yardstick - from the seated Shamash, the justice god of Babylonian. The remainder of the monument which has seven-foot-five-inch tall is protected with spikes chiseled cuneiform script.

The text, which was compiled at the end of Hammurabi's reign, is no more a proclamation of principle than a set of legal precedents, arranged between prose celebrating the just and pious rule of Hammurabi. The Code of Hammurabi provides some of the earliest examples of the retribution law or the “lex talionis” doctrine, sometimes better known as "an eye for an eye."

The 282 decrees are all written in the form of if-then. For instance, if someone steals an ox, then he/she must pay back 30 times its worth. These decrees range from family law to contracts of professional and administrative law, usually drawing different standards of justice for the three classes of Babylonian community—classes of property, freemen, and slaves.

The cost of a doctor to heal a severe wound was 10 shekels of silver for a man, five shekels for a free man and two shekels for a slave. The punishment for malpractice implemented the same scheme: a doctor who killed a wealthy patient would have cut off his hand, while only financial compensation was needed if the victim was a slave.
