The German Sociological Society is a scientific association for the promotion of sociological research and teaching. The association was founded on January 30, 1909 by a group of 39 scientists in Berlin, none of whom was a full-time "sociologist". It is the second oldest sociological society of its kind in the world. Their initiators include Rudolf Goldscheid (1870-1931) and Georg Simmel. Max Weber, who was involved after initial skepticism in the recruitment, had already retired on January 1911 because of the dispute over the duty exemption postulate from the Board of the Society.
