C. Integral proteins span the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane. The name refers to the protein being "integrated" into the membrane. Phospholipids make up the entire bilayer, cholesterol is usually found by the hydrophobic tails of the phospholipids, and peripheral proteins are attached to the outside of the membrane.
