The earliest settlements of the English were in Virginia and Massachusetts but soon spread all along the Atlantic coast, from Maine to Georgia and into the continent's interior as far as the Mississippi river.

The French's first colonies were trading posts in Newfoundland. Montreal and Louisiana soon followed after exploration of the St. Lawrence Valley  and the Mississippi river.

The Dutch settlement was in  Fort Nassau in the Albany area, North America, in the year 1614.  This was followed by Manhattan, after about a dozen years or so.
