The inventions and success of Thomas Alva Edison together with Alexander Graham Bell changed American culture because both of their inventions (the light bulb (among other things) and the phone) enabled Americans to stay up longer because they had a new light source which was independent of the Sun. At the same time, they could communicate better and faster with the help of the telefone.
