At the end of a sprint a product backlog item worked on during the sprint does not meet the definition of "done". The two things that should happen with the undone product backlog item include

  • Items not completed in a sprint should be returned to the product backlog. The return is necessary for re-prioritization by the product owner.  “No partial credit” is the thumb rule when dealing with partially completed work in most agile methods.
  • Undone work may ends up in the technical department because of its complexity.

When teams meet up with all acceptance criteria for the backlog item, there is no need for the product owner to split the item and give partial credit to the part done. The product items must be updated so as to make the work done on them to be transparent.

Simply put, unfinished/undone product is returned back on the product backlog and the backlog is re-ordered by the product owner. Though, unfinished items end up at the top but not always. Items should not be resized to represent only the undone jobs that remain. Do not divide the story to indicate items that was worked on or items that was not worked on.
