This was due to Africa's strategic positioning and abundance of resources (like ivory and gold). To capitalize on these opportunities, countries like Portugal, Great Britain, France, and several others wanted the chance to colonize different parts of Africa. This is why the Berlin Conference was held, to make sure that there were rules/conditions for European countries trying to spread their political and economic influence into Africa.
