The story begins with the words “Tomorrow I die!  Tomorrow I die, and today I want to tell the world what happened...”  This creates suspense because it intrigues readers to want to know why he will die.  Because he is violent, it can be assumed that he will be punished, by death, for some crime; however, the reason is not disclosed until the almost the very end of the story.  Thus, because events are told in chronological order and with a lot of detail, it makes this short story seem much longer than it really is because of the anticipation (and suspense) caused by the Poe’s use of foreshadowing.
