The earth's outermost, rigid layer, the lithosphere, is fragmented into a dozen or more irregularly shaped plates that are riding atop a hotter, more mobile material, the asthenospehere. The tectonic plates are made up of Earth's crust and the upper part of the mantle. The plates fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. The lithospere is subdivided into tectonic plates.
