Madalyn is a manager at a flooring company. He has two workers to install floor in an entire house, Jason and Quantum. Jason can complete the project in 10 hours. Quantum can complete the project in 12 hours. Madalyn wants to know how long it will take them to complete the project together.

Write an equation and solve for the time it takes Jason and Quantum to complete the project together. Explain each step.

I got 1/12+1/10=1/x.

Answer: It will take them about 5.45 hours to paint the wall together.

Your equation is good. However, I always like to take it one step further and multiply all the terms by x. That will gives the equation below.

x/12 + x/10 = 1

Now, all we have to do is solve the equation. Multiply everything by 120. 
And you get:

10x + 12x = 120
22x = 120
x = 5.45
