The North was the hub for immigrants arriving to the US providing a large number of unskilled workers. The area was also first to create factories during the Market Revolution in the early 19th century. Waterways and access to resources allowed for the North to create factories. Limited farmland forced Northern cities to create a manufacturing-based economy.
