D.
When the narrator thinks of the hometown from her youth, all she remembers is
dust. She is not sure why she only remembers the dust, but she does, and in
great detail. She thinks there must have been green somewhere in town, but she
cannot remember it. She says memories are not based on reality but on feeling.
When providing a summary, you will want to leave out details and recant only the facts as you read them. Answer “A” has just a little too much detail to be correct. What, too, is important is to avoid providing your opinion or from sounding like you are inserting your opinion. In answer “B,” with the words, “Surely there must have been green somewhere…” there is an opinionated tone that exists (even though this was the sentiment of the narrator in the excerpt). In answer “C,” opinion has obviously been inserted, and this can be seen with the words, “which makes no sense whatsoever.” As such, the best possible summary is “D.”
