The Mouse. It must maintain a higher metabolism, because, it is an ENDOTHERM., and must expend energy keeping the body temperature regulated.
If a mouse and a small lizard of the same mass were placed in respirometer under identical environmental conditions then mouse would consume oxygen at a higher rate.
What is respiration?
- "It is a process by which animals inhale (breath in) oxygen and exhale (breath out) carbon dioxide."
- During this process energy is released from the food we eat.
- Endotherms (example: mouse) are animals that regulates its body temperature (temperature remains constant) irrespective of the outside environment. They have higher metabolic needs due to which they require higher energy and thus, have high rate of respiration (consume oxygen at a higher rate).
- Ectotherms (example: lizards) are animals that changes its body temperature with respect to the outside environment. They have low metabolic needs due to which they require lower energy and thus, have low rate of respiration.
- It is measured by an instrument, respirometer.
What is respirometer?
- "A respirometer is a device used to measure the rate of respiration of a living organism by measuring its rate of exchange of oxygen and/or carbon dioxide."
Hence, the mouse would consume oxygen at a higher rate.
