There are only blue cubes, yellow cubes and green cubes in a bag.
There are
twice as many blue cubes as yellow cubes
and four times as many green cubes as blue cubes.

Hannah takes at random a cube from the bag.

work out the probability that Hannah takes a yellow cube. ( 3 marks )

yellow = x
blue = 2x                // Blue cubes is twice of yellow
Green = 8x              // Green is four times of blue

Ratio:
Yellow : Blue : Green
   1       :   2    :     8

Let the number of yellows be "a"

  • If there are  twice as many blue cubes as yellow, then the number of blues be 2a
  • If there are  four times as many blue cubes as green, then the number of green is 4a

The total outcome = a + 2a + 4a

The total outcome = 7a

If Hannah takes at random a cube from the bag, the probability that it is yellow is expressed as:

Pr(yellow cube) = a/7a

Pr(yellow cube) = 1/7

Hence the probability that Hannah takes a yellow cube is 1/7
