Plate tectonics is the theory explaining the structure of the earths crust in the resulting features and processes of the interaction of the plates that move slowly over the underlying Mantle. There are four boundary zones that are created by these plate interactions. Which process is responsible for forming the islands of Japan?

The answer is A: convergent boundary zones. The various Japanese islands formed due to the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate below the continental Amurian Plate and Okinawa Plate to the south, and subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Okhotsk Plate to the north. This occurred during the mid-Silurian to the Pleistocene . This explains why much of Japan is mountainous.

A convergent plate boundary happens when two oceanic plates collide making one of the plate to undergo subduction (the older plate). The effect of this type of boundary is destruction of oceanic lithosphere, deep earthquakes, series of volcanic islands and formation of an oceanic trench.The Eastern Caribbean Islands of Martinique is another good example.
