Deamination of amino acids in mammals yields amino groups that are converted to ammonia, which is excreted, and the remaining carbon skeleton, which is converted to one of the reactants of glycolysis or the citric acid cycle. Ammonia, formed from the amino group is toxic for the organism so it needs to be converted into urea and excreted by the kidneys.
The remaining carbon skeleton is converted to glucose, ketone bodies or acetyl CoA.
