In the case of melting, added energy is used to break the bonds between the molecules. If heat is coming into asubstance during a phase change, then this energy is used to break the bonds between the molecules of thesubstance. The example we will use here is ice melting into water.

The temperature of a substance remains the same during phase change.

Temperature and phase change

Phase change involves the transition of substances from one phase to another. It could be from liquid to solid, liquid to gas, gas to liquid, solid to liquid, etc.

For every phase change, energy has to be involved. For example, changing from solid to liquid requires that the molecular force holding the molecules of the solid together is broken.

Thus, the heat supplied is used to break the intermolecular force while the temperature of the substance itself remains unchanged.
