The fact that the nephew initially seems to be very interested in a recently appeared stimulus, but seems not to be very interested in it after a few seconds means that he is is actually displaying habituation. The term habituation describes decrease of responses to a stimulus after repeated or prolonged presentations, as the person becomes accustomed to this stimulus.
