The largest group of immigrants to the united states during the 1840s and 1850s came from ireland, which was then in the throes of the great potato famine.

The potato did not come from Ireland.  The potato came from Central or South America.    

The potato thrived in Ireland.  Ireland did not rely on it's own crops, and only planted one crop.    

Never put your eggs in one basket...
