he broke away from many innocent depictions of wealthy woman being depicted in the rococo era and began (influenced by rubenesque woman or more specifically Rubens himself) there was a depicted form of erotica that was considered so extremely avant-gard. He would take a typical genre scene and use his wife and children as models. one of the most famous and scandalous paintings he created was Odalisque where he depicted his wife as a prostitute who has dark hair and a mysterious facade which was very different than the normal fluffy brushed, flirty, pale skinned rococo paintings
