As a wife, Mrs. Mallard was not free. That's why, when she heard her husband had died, she was not sad. She thought of all the hours that would now be hers alone. She no longer had to obey anyone -- she was finally free.

When her husband arrives home, Mrs. Mallard knows her freedom has been ripped away from her. She is still a wife, still forced to always obey her husband. She dies from the shock of this realization -- not from joy at his being alive.
