summarize

A summary restates all of the events of a paragraph, essay, novel, play, speech, movie, etc in a shorter, more condensed way. Summaries should give all the main points of the piece in a smaller space, without going too much into detail of the smaller points.

To restate briefly is to summarize. When you  restate something, you retell it. Briefly  means you only include what stands out as important.

If you are asked  to summarize, for example, several events from the Civil War, only the important facts and  points will be included. Details such as what General Lee ate on a certain day will be left out.
