The organism of diminutive stature is called microorganisms. They can live as a single cell or in the form of groups. The microorganisms that can cause injury and illness is called pathogen.

The various processes by which organism protects themselves from pathogens are:

  • In plants: to defend them against pathogens, they have slippery and barky dermis.

  • Plants also release antimicrobial substances like certain proteins and enzymes that are competent in destroying pathogens.

  • In animals: they have preventing admission barriers like skin, mucous layers, substances like lysozymes in tears etc.

  • Also inside the body blood cells, immunoglobulins and immune cells help to combat and protect against pathogens.
